Queen's University Belfast is a leader in innovation and education with an international academic reputation.

Founded in 1845 as Queen's College Belfast, it became a university in its own right in 1908 and has a long and distinguished tradition of education and research.

Queen’s is a member of the Russell Group of the UK’s 20 leading research-intensive universities, and its academic profile covers a wide range of disciplines, from medicine, law and engineering to the humanities, social sciences, science and agriculture.
The University’s research credentials were confirmed by the results of the UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise, announced in December 2008. The RAE identified world-class work across all academic disciplines, and ranked 11 subject areas at Queen’s within the top 10 in the UK.
Its research strengths are reflected in the quality of its teaching. In the 2009 independent institutional audit by the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency, Queen’s was given the highest level of assurance. The Times Good University Guide 2009 featured a wide range of Queen’s subjects in the top 10 in the UK.
One of the University’s defining features is its student-centred approach, and Queen’s is currently investing some £260 million to further enhance the experience which it offers its students.
Major projects include the £50 million new library, which opened for business in September 2009, and a face-lift for its Students’ Union, now one of the finest such facilities in the UK, and home to some 150 student clubs and societies.
The University has recently invested over £45 million in providing excellent facilities at Elms Student Village, where accommodation is available on a self-catered basis, with ensuite rooms and Internet access.
Meanwhile, its Student Guidance Centre provides a ‘one stop shop’ where students can access services such as Admissions, Student Records, Exams, Careers (including Work Placement Centre and Jobshop), Counselling, Disability, and Student Finance.

Queen’s is committed to ensuring that its students have an edge in the increasingly competitive graduate job market. It offers a range of international exchanges and work placements, and the chance to gain an added qualification – Degree Plus – which acknowledges job-related skills gained through extra-curricular activities.
Its future plans include the development of a multi-million pound Executive Education Centre in Belfast to enhance continuous professional development and the development of core skills in the Northern Ireland economy, and a major new centre for international and postgraduate students.
The University has links with universities around the world and is enhancing these still further. In the last year alone, significant partnerships have been forged with prestigious institutions in India, China, Malaysia and the United States.
As one of Northern Ireland's largest employers with an annual turnover of some £270 million, Queen's has a huge impact on local wealth and job creation and is a major driving force in local economic development. It is the leading higher education institution in the UK in terms of the annual turnover of its spin-out businesses, and has twice been short-listed for the Times Higher Education Entrepreneurial University of the Year title.
The University is also known as a centre for the arts. Each year it hosts the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s, one of the most exciting arts festivals in the UK and Ireland. It is also home to its own cinema, the Queen’s Film Theatre, the award-winning Naughton Art Gallery, and the Brian Friel Theatre.
Queen’s is located in the heart of Belfast which, with two airports and a number of ferry ports, is only an hour away from all major UK destinations, and easily accessible from across the globe.
Given the sheer breadth of its activities, it is hardly surprising that Queen’s alumni have made their mark in many spheres of life.

Among its alumni are Nobel prize winners poet Seamus Heaney and Northern Ireland’s inaugural First Minister David Trimble, President of Ireland Mary McAleese, Pulitzer prize winner Paul Muldoon, and Professor Frank Pantridge, who developed the mobile coronary care unit.
