With over 700 years of history and 145,000 students Sapienza - founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII - is the first University in Rome and also the largest University in Europe: a city within the city. In Sapienza there are over 4,500 professors and 5,000 administrative and technical staff. The Rectorate is presently organized around a governing body model. A deputy Pro Rector and a group of Pro Rectors with specific skills support the Rector in the management of the University, with the help of some committees.

Sapienza offers a wide choice of courses including over 300 degree programs and 250 first and second level specialised qualifications. Sapienza puts 155 libraries and 21 museums at the disposal of its students, as well as other services: Ciao (Information, reception and guidance), SoRT (Guidance and tutorship services) and assistance for disabled students.

The students coming from other regions are over 30,000 and the foreign students are over 7,000. Incoming and outgoing Erasmus students are about 1,000 per year. Sapienza is implementing Ict services for students, such as on-line enrolments, University e-mail addresses and wireless Campus hotspots.

Sapienza carries out leading scientific investigations in almost all disciplines, achieving high-standard results both on a national and an international level. 23 faculties, 111 departments and 30 Research Centres are devoted to scientific research. The PhD’s programmes are presently over 150 in all fields of knowledge.

The first University of Rome has given to the Italian classical tradition in its manifold manifestations the main masters of the twentieth century, such as Giuseppe Ungaretti and is considered a true “school” in the area of archaeological excavations, achieving results of worldwide importance in Libya, Syria, Turkey and in Rome on the Palatin hill. In the field of physics the heritage of the members of the “via Panisperna” group – among whom Enrico Fermi, Edoardo Amaldi, Emilio Segrè – has been extended to quantum physics, physics of disordered systems, astrophysics.

Sapienza enhances research by offering opportunities to its human resources abroad. Thanks to a special programme for visiting professors, many foreign researchers and teachers periodically come to Sapienza, consolidating over time the quality of its education and research programmes.

Professor Luigi Frati is Rector of the University since November 2008. He has started a big renovation process inside the Campus, giving a prize to the best students – full taxes exemption – eliminating useless structures and reorganizing faculties.

Faculty

Number of Faculty Staff Headcount: 4,768 FTE: 4,200

Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.
