The University of Turku is an international, multidisciplinary scientific university. It has six faculties which cover a wide range of disciplines from humanities and social sciences to medicine and science. University’s aim is to be an internationally known and recognised for both its research and education. A close connection between scientific research and education is the starting point of the education. The goal is that students will adopt an academic way of thinking, which emphasises aiming at creating something new, at a critical approach and at an ethical responsibility. In addition to academic thinking, in the development of the education, the new requirements that working life and societal change set to the academic professionalism are taken into the consideration.

To achieve the goals set for learning, the University aims at developing the education of each discipline as dynamically as their research. University supports the students' possibilities for multidisciplinary studies so that studies in other faculties and in other universities can flexibly be included in their curricula and degrees.

University of Turku has close co-operation with number of universities and higher education institutions around the world. By coordinating The Baltic Sea Region University Network University of Turku can be seen as a driving force in co-operation between the universities of the Baltic Sea region. Also university’s contribution to the Coimbra Group which linking traditional and high standard European universities is significant.

The City of Turku has been a gateway to European cultural impacts in Finland ever since the middle ages. The first university in Finland the Turku Academy was founded in 1640. After the great fire of Turku in the year1827 the Turku Academy was moved to Helsinki, to the new capital of Finland. Later in 1920 the present University of Turku was founded the for the world's first Finnish-speaking University with its founding message: From a free people to the free science and learning. Foundation of the university was made possible by a fund-raising campaign with over 22 000 donors.
