Utrecht University
Founded in 1636 and located in the heart of the Netherlands, Utrecht University is one of Europe's leading research universities, recognised internationally for its high-quality, innovative approach to both research and teaching.
Utrecht University offers a broad range of high-quality Dutch- and English-taught programmes and courses: 3 Bachelor's degree programmes, 89 Masterââ¬â¢s degree programmes, some 200 certificate courses, and more than 50 Summer School courses. In addition, some of the worldââ¬â¢s most talented doctoral students come to Utrecht University to do their PhD research.
Top of the Class
At Utrecht University, in both teaching and research, quality is always the key. Research always plays a fundamental role in the universityââ¬â¢s degree programmes. Course content is closely linked to top-class research, ensuring its high quality. Students are taught in small groups by top researchers and lecturers, often experts in their field.
Thanks to its solid basis in discipline-based scholarship, Utrecht University is at the forefront of developments in interdisciplinary knowledge. Our research continues to have impact in fields ranging from biochemistry and biophysics to human rights and culture.
Room for Talent to Flourish
Thereââ¬â¢s plenty of room for talented, motivated international students to flourish at Utrecht University. For ambitious, dedicated individuals, our demanding programmes provides the opportunity to learn and grow in a world-class academic environment. We encourage students to develop the best within themselves. This includes opportunities for certain highly motivated students to undertake the extra challenges of honours study.
Breadth of Focus
Utrecht University's research and teaching is distinguished by the wide range of academic disciplines covered and, in particular, collaboration between those disciplines. Utrecht University has identified 15 research focus areas (Link?) in which the University excels, that is, multidisciplinary clusters of top-class research groups. It is the breadth of academic disciplines that provides a fertile environment for innovative new approaches in research.
International Environment
International students at Utrecht University will find themselves in good company. Every year, approximately two thousand international students come to Utrecht University to take part in English-taught degree programmes and other courses.. With some 125 nationalities working and studying closely together, students learn to work in an international environment from the start - essential for scientists and scholars in an increasingly globalised world.
Utrechtââ¬â¢s Historic Charm
The University is situated in Utrecht, a lively student city located in the heart of the Netherlands and considered the ââ¬Ëgateway to Europeââ¬â¢. Utrecht has a rich history going back almost 2,000 years, and an architectural legacy that includes both ancient and completely contemporary buildings. Utrecht maintains its old inner-city, with its gracious parks and picturesque canals, cafes and concert halls. The impressive Dom tower looms above the city centre. Below the Dom lie international restaurants, cinemas, clubs and boutiques that give Utrecht its unique, stimulating atmosphere.
Faculty
| Number of Faculty Staff | Headcount: 3,384 FTE: 2,871 | Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator. |
| Number of International Faculty Staff | Headcount: 382 FTE: 349 | Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained. |

Range of Fees
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees in the Netherlands vary for EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students. The tuition fee for Dutch and other EU/EEA students is determined by the Dutch government. The government pays the majority of the cost of studying, and the tuition is only a contribution to the total cost.
The cost of studying for non-EU/EEA students are not covered by the government, and so the University determines these based on the actual cost.
Exceptions to the non-EU/EEA tuition fees
You are entitled to pay lower tuition fees (i.e. EU/EEA tuition fees) if:
you have the Surinam or Swiss nationality;
you receive a UAF grant (for refugee students in the Netherlands);
you meet the nationality requirement for a government study grant from the Informatie Beheer Groep;
you have been continuously enrolled at Utrecht University since before 2006-2007 and have paid the lower tuition fees from 2006-2007. This exception is valid until the academic year 2010-2011.
You have to provide evidence if one of these exceptions applies to you.
Special situations
There are a few situations in which the required tuition fee differs from the regular tuition fee, such as:
Registering for only part of the academic year.
Having an EU/EEA-nationality and already having paid the required tuition for the academic year at another institution for higher education in the Netherlands. You will need a Proof of Payment Tuition Fees (ââ¬ÅBBCââ¬Â) document from the institution for which you paid tuition fees.

Accommodation
Accommodation
A place to stay
Utrecht is a city of higher education, and students make up a considerable part of its population. This has a very positive effect on the atmosphere in the city, but it also means that the demand for student housing usually exceeds the supply, and finding a place to stay in Utrecht can be a real challenge. Utrecht University wants to assist its international students and staff members as much as possible in finding suitable temporary accommodation.
Accommodation reserved for students and staff
Utrecht University does not own any housing or accommodation. Instead, the University has an agreement with SSH Short Stay Solutions, a local housing corporation that offers temporary furnished housing. They reserve a range of furnished accommodation especially for international students and staff of Utrecht University. The University covers the administrative fee if you make use of this offer. However, Utrecht University does not guarantee the availability of housing, and the number of reserved accommodation is limited.
Please note that the reserved accommodation for students is only available for exchange students and international students who enrol in an international degree programme, and who do not yet live in the Netherlands. It is not available for international students who enrol in a Dutch taught programme, nor for Dutch students who enrol in an international degree programme.
Upon arrival
If you arrive before the start of your rental contract, after office hours or during the weekend, you may need to spend a night in a hostel or hotel. Affordable options are: Budget hostel Strowis in Utrecht city-center, Bed and Breakfast Utrecht City Center or Hostel Stay Okay in Bunnik. For information on other tourist accommodation, you can also check the official Utrecht Tourist information website.
Accommodation Range
Rental periods and fees
University reserved accommodation can be rented for a fixed period only. The rental agreement cannot be cancelled, except in certain serious and unforeseen circumstances as described in SSH Short Stay Solutionsââ¬â¢ Terms & Conditions, which can be found on their website. The fixed rental periods are:
Exchange students (international students who study in Utrecht as part of their degree programme at another university):
5 months (September 1st 2009 until January 31st 2010 OR February 1st 2010 until June 30th 2010 OR
10 months (September 1st 2009 until June 30th 2010)
Bachelorââ¬â¢s and Masterââ¬â¢s students (international students who enrol in an international degree programme in Utrecht):
12 months (September 1st 2009 until August 31st 2010)
Rental fees are roughly between ââ¬400 and ââ¬700 per month and include utilities (water, heating, electricity). If you rent a room through SSH Short Stay Solutions from the accommodation reserved for Utrecht University, you do not pay an administrative fee. You do pay a deposit, but this covers your first and last monthââ¬â¢s rent. The rental agreement cannot be cancelled once you have signed it.
Although international Bachelorââ¬â¢s programmes run for 3 years, bachelorââ¬â¢s students can only apply for reserved housing for the first 12 months. After the first year, you have to find accommodation yourself. Masterââ¬â¢s programmes run for 1 or 2 years. Masterââ¬â¢s students can initially apply for 12 months only, but they can reapply for another year in March 2010.
