University College, Bristol opened in October 1876 with two professors, five lecturers and 99 students. It was the first college in the country to admit men and women on an equal footing. The University's reputation grew steadily throughout the 1930s, it became known as an institution with formidable academic strengths and an unshakeable commitment to quality - characteristics that are just as apparent now.
The University organises its academic affairs in some 45 departments and 15 research centers which are arranged in art, engineering, science, medicine & dentistry, medical &veterinary science, social science& law faculties. Bristol has a diverse range of academic subjects on offer to prospective students, 46 in total. The level of support for the students is high and many achieve the high standards on which the University's reputation is built.

The University is committed to independent enquiry, which allows students and staff to pursue their ideas with rigour and integrity, together with a high-quality learning experience. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, Bristol achieved the top rating of 5 or 5* in 78% of its departments, demonstrating the environment of international-class research.The University is located in the centre of the City of Bristol, less than a mile from the original medieval waterfront. Within easy walking distance, the city centre has shopping precincts, international restaurants and food stores, as well as theatres cinemas, museums, concert halls and other entertainment centres. Life in Bristol is relaxed, with a vibrant youth culture in which the University students participate enthusiastically to complement their studies.The University is one of the most competitive in the UK for domestic students. International students holding appropriate qualifications do not, however, have to compete for places in most departments, and applications from suitably qualified candidates are welcomed.Accommodation in single study bedrooms is guaranteed for all international students who accept before the deadline in mid-July. Bristol has very popular and convenient Postgraduate residences, where social life and study happen alongside each other.Bristol has its own international airport, with links to continental Europe in Amsterdam and Paris. Many international students choose to take long-haul flights to these cities with an onward connection to Bristol, avoiding the queues at the London airports. The taxi ride from the airport costs around £15. Transport from the London airports is easy, with a choice of bus or train, costing around £30. The city is 90 minutes by rail from London.
