Brunel celebrates 40 years as a university in 2006 and, in the run-up to this anniversary, we are investing in a multi-million pound Masterplan that has already seen huge developments in sporting, teaching and research facilities as well as large numbers of additional research-focused academic appointments.

Brunel's rise since 1966 has been impressive and our reputation grows year on year. Now a university of nearly 13,000 students - 3,000 engaged in postgraduate and research study - we offer opportunities across a range of disciplines that embraces both the traditional and the new.

Our special approach is to combine academic rigour with the practical, entrepreneurial and imaginative approach pioneered by our namesake, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We apply this winning formula to courses and research that enthuse our students (and give them excellent employment opportunities), have valuable applications to the wider world and push the boundaries of knowledge and understanding.

If proof was needed for our optimism, we have just completed a £6.5 million outdoor sports complex. By early in 2005, we shall have a new £7 million indoor athletics facility and by 2006 will have opened a new £9 million Health Services and Social Care Building. We have just doubled the size of the University Library, recently opened a state-of-the-art Information Technology laboratory and are adding new residential accommodation and social facilities to our already extensive amenities. On top of this, we have invested £14 million on new research staff and centres of excellence.

Last but not least, we boast a 100% 'excellent' teaching standard, as judged by the Government's own audit process, in every subject assessed since 1999, and our ranking in independent league tables has seen improvements across the board - 12 places in one year alone as judged by The Sunday Times.

Faculty

Number of Faculty Staff Headcount: 0 FTE: 818

Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, hospital residents and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.
