Learning a language opens a door to another culture. Birkbeck’s BA French Studies with Foundation Year allows students to raise their French language competence to a high level of fluency and gain the linguistic skills needed for efficient negotiation with French speakers, combined with a critical appreciation of the cultural values that lie at the heart of French life. Students will learn about literature, thought and film, and French politics and society, and enhance your skills, including translating, summary-writing, and delivering written and oral presentations. Before proceeding to the main degree, students will spend their Foundation Year preparing themselves for a degree in the arts by improving their study and research skills and gaining arts-related knowledge and understanding. Students will also have the opportunity to take a language module as part of the Foundation Year. Graduates can pursue careers in international organisations or businesses, education, translation, research or journalism. This degree may also be useful in becoming a translator, secondary school teacher, social researcher or journalist.
