Statistics and Economics (BSc)

Birkbeck’s BSc Statistics and Economics brings together the disciplines of statistics and operational research with applications in economics and finance. It encourages a systematic approach to problem-solving and focuses on the collection, presentation and interpretation of data. It is suited to those working in the financial sector or for statistical careers in commerce, industry, medicine, transport, government and education. The first year of the programme consists of compulsory courses, in order to provide a common base for further study. In the second, third and fourth years there will be a mix of compulsory and optional courses. For the options students can choose whichever interest one most, and in that way tailor the degree to match and develop one’s interests. Graduates can pursue careers in data collection, research and analysis, economics or modelling and forecasting. This degree may also be useful in becoming a statistician, economist, chartered accountant, financial risk analyst or civil service fast-streamer.
