Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Women and Gender Studies

This is an interdisciplinary course of study that fosters understanding of the ways in which social patterning of female and male roles impacts human behavior and the accumulation of knowledge. Students work with faculty members to connect feminist theories with advocacy and social justice and to critique the cultural construction of gender and power in the global community. This interdisciplinary field of study offers opportunities inside and outside the classroom that will help students develop the advocacy, research, critical thinking, and written and oral communication skills to prepare for their chosen careers. The Women and Gender Studies major requires 30 hours of coursework and a second major taken in any discipline offered at Central Michigan University. The Women and Gender Studies program focuses on the intersections of gender, ethnicity, class, and nationality to understand systems of power and oppression in everyday life, as well as the ongoing struggle for justice throughout the world. Students work with faculty members to connect feminist theories with advocacy and social justice and to critique the cultural construction of gender and power in the global community. Program curriculum and activities also examine the extent to which women have located sources of strength as active agents of change to improve the daily lives of others in the global community. This interdisciplinary field of study offers opportunities inside and outside the classroom that will help them develop the advocacy, research, critical thinking, and written and oral communication skills to prepare for their chosen career. Careers that the majors find themselves are as administrator of women's organizations, attorney, coordinator of women's programs in government, counselor, crisis intervention, journalist, lobbyist, magazine editor, marketer, psychologist, rape crisis specialist, social worker, teacher and as women's studies director.
