Doctor of Medicine / PhD - Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology and Immunology

The M.D./Ph.D. program is designed for students who are interested in a career conducting medically-related research. In general, students in the program spend the first two years in medical school, with research rotations over the summer. Years 3-6 of the program are generally spent performing Ph.D. research in a laboratory on either the Georgetown or NIH campus under the auspices of one of many available Georgetown graduate programs. Particular strengths of the Georgetown M.D./Ph.D. program include cancer research (Tumor Biology Training Program) and neuroscience (Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience). After completing their thesis research and successfully defending their thesis, students return to medical school to complete the final two years of clinical rotations.
