Located in Kanayagawa, Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, Fukushima University is one of the leading universities in Japan. It was formed in 1949 by combining three pre-existing colleges: Fukushima College of Economics, Fukushima Normal School and Fukushima Youth Normal School. Today, it’s home to nearly 5,000 students.
Initially, only Liberal Arts and Economics subjects were taught at the university. However, the range of teaching has expanded over time and today students can enroll to study in one of five undergraduate faculties or four graduate schools.
Fukushima City has plenty to offer students based here, with plenty of ways to spend your down-time between lectures. The city is particularly known for the high number of onsen (Japanese hot springs used as bathing facilities) around its outskirts and for being the location of the only Japan Racing Association horse racing track in the Tōhoku region of Japan.
