Fun and Unusual Ways Students are Staying Active in Quarantine
By Chloe Lane
Updated March 13, 2021 Updated March 13, 2021Students around the world are finding new ways to exercise and keep active during quarantine. Whether this is through Instagram challenges, trying a new sport, or doing group events, there are plenty of ways to stay fit – and raise money for a good cause.
We talk to people who have raised money for charity while staying fit and some who are just trying to find new and exciting ways to exercise.
University of Sussex’s Netball Team Run the Length of the UK
34 members of the University of Sussex’s netball team have run the length of the UK – just over 1,400km – to raise money for the NHS.
The event was organized by the presidents of the netball team, Georgia Lambert and Eve Moseby.
The team members ran 44km each and took part in the challenge from all over the UK, including Teesside, Cardiff, Devon, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Brighton.
“The NHS are crucial in saving lives every day and their role has become even more important since the pandemic,” said organizer Georgia, a second-year accounting and finance student.
“We wanted to give back to our healthcare system who we, as sportswomen, have all used. We wanted to say a huge thank you and this was the best way we could think of.
The team exceeded their goal of raising £1,000, having raised an incredible £4,555 so far.
Eve, a first year Marketing and Management student, said: “We are over the moon with the response and can’t thank everyone who has donated enough for their support. It really is keeping the girls motivated and our legs a little bit less sore.
“We are feeling tired and our legs are starting to really ache but there is a huge sense of pride in all of our girls and ourselves. It feels incredible to have raised so much for our NHS.”

Virtual 10K Run
QS team member Kelsey Van Scoy hosted a virtual 10km run on Facebook. She encouraged her friends to get out to run or walk the 6.2 miles on May 31 and post the time taken to run it on the event page.

Instagram challenges
Many people have been trying out a variety of challenges set by their friends on Instagram. One of the most popular is the Run for Heroes challenge, where you run five kilometers, nominate five friends and donate five pounds to the NHS.
“I think the 5k challenge is great because people who wouldn’t normally do that sort of thing have been encouraged to go out and do it – even if it’s just walking,” said Sharon Gale, a third-year psychology student at Goldsmiths, University of London.
“I’ve seen people try it who don’t like running and they actually managed to run the whole five kilometers. It’s also a really fun way to raise money for charity.”
So far, the challenge has raised over £4.5 million for NHS Charities Together. Find out more here.
University of Portsmouth’s sports teams run 12,160km for charity
Nineteen of the University of Portsmouth’s sports clubs joined together to raise money for NHS Charities Together.
The challenge started out with the University of Portsmouth’s Netball Club (UPNC) aiming to run 1,001km between April 15th and April 21st.
“We initially saw that Southampton University Netball Club were aiming to run 1,000km in 7 days, and UPNC President, Louise Buller suggested we attempt to run 1,001km in 7 days,” said the UPNC media secretary, Eleanor Smith, a second year geography student.
“I decided to try and make it university-wide and we had 19 other sports clubs get involved,” said Eleanor.
Each club set their own distance, with a combined target of 7,516km across the 430 people taking part. By day five (of seven) they had already achieved their goal.
“I thought then that reaching 10,000km could be do-able” said Eleanor. “Every club continued to give their all and run crazy distances.”
Between them the teams managed to run 12,160.12km and raised £3,965 – almost doubling their £2,000 target.
