A creative mind is more engaged and thinks outside the box. Arts and culture enrich the experiences of the entire campus community, and the rich diversity of their offerings constitutes a considerable amenity to all who work and study in the institution.

To measure how well a university facilitates and supports arts and culture, QS Stars looks at four different areas:

Arts and culture facilities

To be awarded full points for arts and culture facilities, universities must have the following facilities:

  1. Purpose-built museum
  2. Purpose-built theatre
  3. Concert hall
  4. Dedicated art studio
  5. Campus art exhibition programme
  6. Dedicated recording studio or music practice rooms
  7. Campus radio station, TV studio or TV channel
  8. Cinema
  9. Outdoor art space (such as a sculpture garden)

Concerts, cultural events and exhibitions

Cultural activities can enhance the confidence students, improve their performance and even assist them in shaping a good career.

Institutions are awarded top points in this category for having on- or off-campus concerts, cultural events, or exhibitions organised by the academic institution over a year period.

Artistic and cultural accolades

Awards and accolades are pivotal in a student's life. Even the slightest recognition works as a great motivation and often encourages them to work even harder.

Institutions are awarded top points if students, staff, faculties, or the institution as a whole receive between 5 to 25 awards or accolades for publicly accessible works relating to the arts or local or national culture. We do not count awards or recognition given by the university to its own students.

Community art and cultural investment

Community art reflects its surroundings. Artwork helps express a community's values and creates a sense of awareness for community members and visitors.

Universities are awarded maximum points if they invest at least 0.5% of annual turnover or USD$1 million in art projects outside the university, or in cultural preservation over a one-year period.

QS Stars does the evaluating for you, so you can easily see where a university’s strengths are in order to find a programme that suits your priorities. Take a look at which universities have achieved a high QS Stars rating for their approach to arts and culture.
