North of Scotland, an Alternative: Distance learning

Distance learning can be a great choice for those who are unable to study on-campus. A new course aims to give students in Scotland's remote north an alternative study option.

In the UK, the Open University offers an extensive range of undergraduate degrees and graduate qualifications, but there are even more on offer. Many other top universities in the UK are also offering undergraduate degrees via distance learning, making a university qualification all the more accessible.

In July 2008, the University of Aberdeen launched a new science qualification for distance learning students. The Diploma in Science may be undertaken on a part time basis through the university's Flexible Science Program.

Dr Sally Middleton, program coordinator at the University of Aberdeen, says the body of students studying through distance learning courses is diverse. “We recognise the need to meet the requirements of these students - from young mothers through to retired professionals, and in the case of Aberdeen, students working in the oil and gas industry. Distance learning programs allow a balance between studies and personal commitments."

Students studying for the Diploma in Science at the University of Aberdeen will have a similar learning structure to other undergraduate students who have chosen to study for their degree via this method. Study materials can be accessed on web pages, which is also the method that students will use to submit assignments. Students will also have the opportunity to attend lectures and tutorials if they wish.

Dr Peter Murray, director of the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Aberdeen, says providing opportunities for those who can't commit to full-time study is a core objective of the university.

With the growing popularity of undergraduate distance learning programs, it won't be long before the core objective of many other top universities in the UK is to provide quality distance learning programs as well.
