The Geology and Land Management second cycle degree programme aims to provide in-depth cultural, technical and professional training in the field of Earth Science. The aim is to provide students with the cultural instruments and critical analysis skills required to enter the world of work and research, also through experimental practice in the field and in the laboratory.
The aim of the degree programme is to train, by providing robust basic knowledge, Geologists with specific competencies in the following fields:
- assessment, forecasting and mitigation of geological risks, with special reference to landslide phenomena and hydrogeological and hydraulic risk
- geological and technical design and geology applied to engineering   - characterisation, exploitation and protection of groundwater resources and remediation of contaminated sites
- detailed stratigraphic reconstruction of the architecture of geological bodies, with applications for the identification of aquifers, hydrocarbon fields, quarries and mines
- characterisation of themorpho-bathymetric and seismostratigraphic structure of submerged areas
- identification, exploitation and management of mineral raw materials
The professional competencies acquired can be applied in public bodies, institutions, companies, industries and professional firms.
The curriculum is divided into three curricula corresponding to three thematic areas that cover respectively applied geology, paleontology and stratigraphy and minero-petrographic characterization of raw materials. Part of the first two thematic areas focuses on teaching the main techniques for geophysical subsurface exploration, GIS mapping and geological survey. These competencies are basic both as for applied geology as for stratigraphic description.
In the first curriculum8(A) topics related to geological risk assessment, engineering applications of geology, and the identification and protection of groundwater resources are discussed in greater detail. In the second curriculum (B), topics concerning the geometric and textural characterisation of sedimentary bodies, the detailed reconstruction of reservoirs and their associated resources, and the characterisation of marine areas are discussed. The minero-petrographic area, focused in the third curriculum(C), delves into topics related to the physical and chemical characterisation of mineral raw materials, with a view to the exploration, sustainable exploitation and recycling of mineral raw materials within the circular economy.
