The BA History allows students to explore challenging questions about the impact of political, social and cultural change on individuals, social groups and regions. From African-American slavery to Stalin’s Russia—from households in Essex to witchcraft in Germany—from the history of disease to revolutions in China, students are encouraged to explore the past in order to better understand the present. Essex offers a wide range of optional modules about subjects close to home and further afield, including: The American Revolution; Mass immigration to Britain throughout history; The role of women in Early Modern England; Chinese history and its relations with the outside world; Witchcraft and witch-hunts in Europe and New England between the 15th and 18th centuries. The four-year version of this degree allows students to spend the third year abroad or employed on a placement abroad, while otherwise remaining identical to the three-year course. Upon arrival to Essex, students can decide whether they would like to combine their course with a placement year. Students will be responsible for finding their placement, but with support and guidance provided by both their department and the placements team.
