TheIndian Law Institute was established in 1956 as a result of the efforts of theleading jurists of India for over a number of years. It is a truism that asound legal order is the basis of a democratic society, because law is one ofthe major instrumentalities by which a society can hope to prosper and develop.The Institute plays vital role for reinvigorating legal research as the law,the legal research and the legal education had been neglected areas in India,both before and after the independence. The Institute is consistentlycontributing for a sustained institutionalized research encompassing projectsrequiring field studies and group thinking. The Indian Law Institute is theonly Deemed University of Higher Education and Research in Law, under the aegisof Supreme Court of India and under Administrative Control of Ministry of Law& Justice, Govt. of India. Chief Justice of India is Ex-officio President,Minister of Law & Justice is Ex-officio Vice-President of the Institute.Secretary, Deptt. Of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law & Justice, Sectetary,Deptt. Of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance and Secretary, Higher Education,Ministry of Human Resource Development are Ex-officio Members of the GoverningCouncil / Executive Committee of the Institute. The Indian Law Institute is a level playing field in the cutting edgelegal education and research bringing forth the Judiciary, Academics andAdvocacy at one place.
The IndianLaw Institute is the only Autonomous Institution of Higher Legal Research underCentral Government with PAN India presence (with 17 State Units being run byState High Courts).
The teaching learning process in the ILI ispredominantly student-centric. The students are imbibed with sound ethical andmoral values while teaching the course curriculum. Special lectures, workshops,seminars, help them to acquire sound knowledge of law. The students of thisInstitute have proved their excellence and many are experts of law field.

TheInstitute Library is one of the leading law libraries inAsia and attracts scholars from all over the world. The University GrantsCommission has recognized the library as a place for legal research leading todoctorate degree in law. The ILI library has computerized all its catalogue toprovide access to the information about the availability of books, journals andlegal resources. It contains around 82500 volumes and receives about 190current legal periodicals. The Institute has recently introduced “Remote-Xs”application for providing the access to various subscribed databases toauthorized external users (viz., Judges of Supreme Court of India, various HighCourts and various central institutions and law colleges).
