On 1 April 2004, Kagoshima University started afresh as the National University Corporation Kagoshima University. The University has almost a half-century of history, and has become one of the biggest universities in Japan comprised of 8 faculties and 9 graduate schools with approximately 12,000 students enrolled: 10,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate. Located at the southern gateway to Japanese archipelago, the region of Kagoshima has flourished as a center for exchange of overseas culture and diplomacy. Therefore Kagoshima University has a most important responsibility among the Japanese national universities to endeavor to achieve its role as a university from both a geographical and historical viewpoint as well as contribute to the region in general.
