What will the future bring in terms of energy? Will we produce electricity from renewable sources such as wind and sun? Or from waste? The Master in Energy addresses students who wish to implement modern energy technologies for end-users of the electrical value chain. 

About this programme 

The Master in Energy for Smart Cities programme balances exciting technological opportunities in energy with environmental and socio-economic aspects of smart cities, such as energy efficiency in buildings, electric transportation, energy economics, smart lighting and other city services. The programme aims at maintaining a multidisciplinary approach to energy technology, while allowing you ample freedom to shape your personal profile.

During the programme, you have the opportunity to engage directly with major industry players and research institutes, small specialist companies and innovative start-ups in the field of smart cities and buildings. The programme aims at maintaining a multidisciplinary approach to energy technology, while allowing you ample freedom to shape your personal profile.

The programme is a collaboration between KU Leuven and the Grenoble Institute of Technology (INP), Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC). You spend your first year at one university, your second year at another, and you have the possibility to complete an internship at a third. After successfully completing the programme, you receive a double degree, one from each university you attended during the two years, as well as an KIT-EIT Energy certificate in recognition of the extra activities accomplished.

Admission criteria

The programme is based on the first part of the Bachelor, which offers general education in the basic sciences (mathematics-physics-chemistry) in combination with a number of well chosen technical basic courses. Of these courses, the applied physics courses (electricity/magnetism, mechanics, thermodynamics) are seen as an absolute minimum. This is followed by the second part of the bachelor, in which the theoretical basic knowledge of electrical technology and mechanical engineering is offered from the basic scientific and technical knowledge of the first part.

The internal foundations of this knowledge are system and control theory, electrical energy (and drives), energy conversion machines and systems, fluid mechanics and heat transfer (or transport phenomena). To gather designing experience, the students have to become acquainted with the different domains in a shared project designing different basic components of an entire system. The different aspects of the basic courses will here return in a practical form.

Student profile

You have completed a bachelor’s degree (worth a minimum of 180 ECTS credits). If you are in your final year of undergraduate education, you can also apply and receive a conditional offer.

You are fascinated by energy technology and interested in environmental and socio-economic factors, as well as the electrical and thermo-mechanical aspects of the urban environment. You have excellent knowledge of the English language encompassing its understanding, speaking and writing.
