Erasmus Mundus - Master of Science in Imaging and Light in Extended Reality

This two-year Erasmus Mundus programme combining Imaging, Lighting and Information Technology, aims to educate students in advanced technologies, methodologies and practical applications so that they can meet the growing demands of industry and society.

About the programme

The Master of Science in Imaging and Light in Extended Reality (IMLEX) provides a multidisciplinary and innovative approach combining Imaging, Lighting and Information Technology. The objective is to educate students in advanced technologies, methodologies and practical applications with two goals: to improve the career prospects of graduates and to meet the needs of industry and society. Students will develop professional and social skills useful in both a European and Japanese cultural context. Graduates will have competences in: Extended reality (XR): Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality (AR, MR, VR), industrial environments with robots and complex elements, Imaging, Rendering and Lighting.

All IMLEX students will start their studies in semester 1 for fundamental courses at the University of Eastern Finland. In semester 2, students have to make a choice between two tracks:

  • Computational Imaging at Université Jean Monnet (France)
  • Lighting at KU Leuven (Belgium)
The second study year (semester 3) starts in Japan at Toyohashi University of Technology, with topics of Lighting and XR / Imaging and XR. Semester 4 is dedicated for the master's thesis in one of the partner universities or in the industry.

Career perspectives

IMLEX graduates will find broad employment opportunities in various sectors including lighting, robotics, imaging and optics.

Upon completion of the programme, you will be well equipped with professional and socials skills and you will be an expert who, in addition to a solid theoretical understanding of virtual reality, also possesses strong practical skills in virtual reality applications. Your engineering profile can lead you to careers across the industry from technological expert to researcher or boardroom executive, performing a wide range of functions.
