Students enrolled in our doctoral program hold a master's degree in the discipline (or equivalent). After two terms of schooling, they submit their thesis project during the second year and have one year to prepare a preliminary examination for the drafting of their thesis. The whole process normally takes between four and five years. Many of our graduates are destined for academic careers. No waiver is automatic. Exemption requests must be submitted in writing to the Graduate Studies and Research Committee.

To be admitted to the Ph.D. program, the candidate must meet the following conditions:
  1. Hold an MA in French, Quebec or Francophone literature, or the equivalent; have obtained an average of at least 75% during their master's studies.
  2. Present a research project, in French, indicating with some precision the field and the methodology of the research that he intends to pursue for his doctoral thesis and the name of the professor under whose direction he wishes to work. The Admissions Commission will be better able to judge, from this project, the seriousness of the candidate and his aptitudes for advanced literary research.
