About Russian University of Transport

Russian University of Transport founded in 1896 is now a multidisciplinary and practice-focused university, the largest one in Russia in the field of transport and transportation. RUT University implements its development strategy in close cooperation with industrial partners. 

RUT offers a range of 420 programs in the field of transport-related civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, transport operations, management, economics, law, intermodal transportation, including 174 undergraduate programs, 79 programs for engineers (5-year course), 91 master programs, and 250 Ph.D. and D.Sc. programs, as well as high education programs, training, retraining and MBA courses for staff and professionals of railway, water, road, urban transport, transport construction and logistics, academic staff and researchers.

RUT University conducts research and applied studies within a wide scope of natural and engineering sciences, in the fields related to development of intelligent transport systems, sustainable transport, navigation tools and systems, transportation & logistics, vehicles and infrastructure.

RUT University participates among other leading Russian universities in the national program intended to support the universities closely cooperating with the industry. 

The University implements digital technology and sustainability approach in its educational activity.  

The University comprises: 6 institutes (Institute of Transport Engineering and Control Systems, Institute of Railway Track, Construction and Structures, Institute of Operation and Digital Technologies, Institute of Economics and Finance, Institute of International Transport Communications, Law Institute), 8 academies (Academy of Basic Studies, Academy of Water Transport, Russian Railways Academy, Russian Open Transport Academy, Academy of Higher Engineering School, Academy of Road Intelligent Transport Systems, Academy of Civil Aviation, Road Academy), 5 colleges (Moscow College of Transport, College of the Academy of Water Transport, Medical College, Law College, College of International Transport Communications), as well as RUT gymnasium and Technopark.

There are almost 80 departments that provide courses in majors, numerous subjects and academic disciplines. Besides bachelor and master’s degree courses, there are numerous transport specific 5 year-long courses leading to “specialist” (engineer) diploma. Many students continue their studies having signed contracts with future employees. Students are provided with possibility to do internship as part of curriculum. 

Besides almost 30,000 full and part time students in higher education programs, more than 600 students acquire education via distance learning. More than 6500 students follow high education courses, and more than 36,000 transport employees and managers attend annually continuous learning, retraining and refreshment courses at the University following more than 500 programs in 17 enlarged transport related areas.

The University maintains partner relations with more that 200 universities and organisations from 53 countries and participates in many academic and professional associations. 

By 2021 the number of joint educational programs developed with international partner universities had exceeded 25. By the end of 2022 the number of international students studying  undergraduate, graduate and high education programs, attending language courses had approached  2400 people from 58 countries.
