Introduction

The Department of Kinesiology at the National Tsing Hua University, formerly known as the Department of Physical Education in the National Hsinchu University of Education, was founded in 1999. At the beginning, the main purpose of the development was to cultivate elementary school PE teachers. Afterwards, in response to the diversification of teacher training and industry changes, it adjusted competitive curriculum features, such as sports health management, leisure studies, sports administration management and research talent training. In 2016, the school merged with National Tsing Hua University, adjusted its development direction and renamed ""Department of Kinesiology"".

Department of Kinesiology at the National Tsing Hua University advances interdisciplinary knowledge of human movement performances and physical activities within contexts such as exercise, health care, and sport through research and teaching excellence. To enhance the faculty member’s professional development, the department has recruited relevant faculty members from both inside and outside the university, including mechanical, physics, materials, science and technology management, and the athletic department. Students have the opportunity to learn interdisciplinary knowledge across fields and achieve their optimal goals. At present, there are educational systems such as the undergraduate program, master program, and master's in-service program.

Features

The department is the only university with a sports science department among the top universities in Taiwan. It has an indicator and a leading role in sports sciences development and will attract top students in sports-related research in Taiwan and abroad. The department comprises 13 full-time faculty members providing specific expertise in the following three parts:

  1. Sports science/kinesiology-related research: Research within the Department of Kinesiology is collaborative and cross-disciplinary in nature. To cultivate sports science talents, in addition to the first specialty program of the department, students are encouraged to take the program of the other college as the second specialty. In the third and fourth academic years, we hope students enter the laboratory, developing sports science topics to solve the problems encountered in the current sports scenes.
  2. Sports competition: To train top athlete students to become future sports coaches. The courses are based on expertise training, basic knowledge of sports science, coaching, and so on. In addition to continuing to improve their sports technical performance, they are also preparing their ability for being a sports coach after retirement.
  3. Teacher Cultivation: To train PE teachers in the field of health and physical education in primary and secondary schools, in addition to the courses of our department, they also take pre-service courses for teachers to become excellent primary and secondary schools in the field of health and physical education.
