The Department of Power Mechanical Engineering (PME) of National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) was founded in 1972 with undergraduate and master’s programs. The Ph.D. program was then established in 1981. The department has gained excellent reputation in both academia and industry for its distinctive features. Especially, the department has been well known for its integration of mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines. As an initiative to set up innovative road map for future developments of mechanical engineering, the PME department has reformed its regular curriculum and established four advanced engineering programs to educate young elites and to meet the nation’s future needs. These programs include Energy, Electrical and Control, Micro and Nano Technology, and Precision Machinery and Intelligent Manufacturing. Furthermore, the department has established several dual-degree programs with internationally renowned institutions to promote international collaborations. The specialized and globalized programs make the PME department a premier international institution for innovative learning and research.

Our department takes great pride in its high-quality education program and substantial research accomplishments achieved in the past five decades. In 2005, the PME department was one of the first few institutions accredited by the Institute of Engineering Education in Taiwan (IEET, a nationwide academic accreditation agency) for its high-quality undergraduate program. Furthermore, the master and Ph.D. graduates produced by the department have been well recognized by industry, government, and academia. The cutting-edge research and university-industry collaborations accomplished by our students, alumni, and faculty have been recognized both nationally and internationally.

The PME department now has 45 full-time faculty members with a wide variety of research and teaching interests. Our faculty members publish more than 200 research papers in international journal and conference proceedings every year. A wide-spectrum of expertise of our faculty members allows the department to create innovative techniques in the fields of mechanical, electrical, opto-mechatronic, micro/nano, and bio-medical engineering. In particular, six of our faculty members were listed as the World’s Top 2% Scientists in 2020 and fifteen of the faculty members have been elected as Fellows by international engineering societies over the past decades. Thanks to the achievement of our faculty and students, the PME department is recognized as one of the top 100 programs worldwide by QS World University Ranking in Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering. The department is committed to continuing our leadership role in education and research."
