The Master of Visual Anthropology, founded in 2009, is one of the first graduate programs in visual anthropology in Latin America. It trains professionals committed to the analysis and understanding of the ways in which visuality, sensoriality, and the production, circulation, and uses of images mediate contemporary sociocultural complexity. Likewise, our master's degree promotes and reflects on audiovisual methodologies in social research and provides solid training for the making of ethnographic documentaries.
The research carried out in the master's degree is grouped into four lines of ethnographic research. The first encompasses analyzes of material culture, usually in relation to museum collections, audiovisual archives, and the anthropology of art and memory. The second is focused on the analysis of expressive culture, performance and the anthropology of the sensory, which includes not only the visual but also the tactile and auditory. The third is focused on media anthropology with an emphasis on digital technologies and virtual and internet ethnography. Finally, the fourth line of research is dedicated to the making of ethnographic documentaries.
This bundle of different themes, which can be intertwined in particular projects, provides our students with a solid theoretical and methodological background that not only prepares them for the analysis of complex contemporary socio-cultural worlds but also gives them tools to critically contribute in related professional areas. with management, policies and cultural industries, multidisciplinary social research, documentary filmmaking, audiovisual communication and related contexts.
Our master's theses can have two formats. The first, a written thesis complemented by an audiovisual component; and, the second, the making of an ethnographic documentary complemented with a theoretical reflection on it.
