Program Learning Outcomes for BA in Spanish and Portuguese Students graduating from this program will: Demonstrate an advanced level of communicative proficiency when writing, speaking, listening to, reading and translating Spanish or Portuguese, including a high degree of ability in interacting with native Spanish or Portuguese speakers and text. Demonstrate analytical competence and independent and critical thinking skills by analyzing and responding to Spanish or Portuguese communications, including: identifying and evaluating arguments, ideas, and evidence, constructing critical responses to Spanish or Portuguese texts, and pursuing independent study or research in some facet of Spanish or Portuguese language or culture. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the social, historical, political, and cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world and Spanish-speaking communities and apply this knowledge to reading and analyzing authentic cultural products, including literature, art and film. They will understand how these cultural products reflect or construct facets of the Spanish-speaking world’s history, culture, and identity. Degree Requirements for BA in Spanish and Portuguese For general university requirements, see Graduation Requirements. No more than two courses taught in English may count toward the major in Spanish and Portuguese, and more than half of the course for the major must be taken at Rice University. SINGLE MAJORS In addition to the requirements listed above, students majoring in Spanish and Portuguese must complete at least 30 semester hours in upper-level courses (SPAN 330 and above) as follows: ADVANCED COURSEWORK IN SPANISH One course between SPAN 330 and SPAN 359 Four courses between SPAN 360 and SPAN 399 Four courses at the 400-level and above ELECTIVES IN SPANISH One course from Hispanic linguistics (see below for list of courses) One course from Spanish literature and/or culture (see below for list of courses) One course Latin American literature and/or culture. (see below for list of courses) One Additional Elective course (see below for list of courses) Note: Courses used towards the Hispanic linguistics, Spanish literature and/or culture, and Latin American literature and/or culture requirements, can be used toward the Advanced Coursework requirements.
