As a joint honours student with Modern Languages students will gain fluency in the language of their choice - French, German, Italian or Spanish. Whether the students start at beginners’, advanced or native-speaker levels, they will study core language components, gaining skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening, with language teaching led by native speakers. The remainder of the modern languages study will give students an opportunity to explore the literature, art, culture and history of the language area they are studying, from seventeenth-century French theatre to representations of childhood and youth in German culture, and from Italian fashion and design to visual arts from across the Spanish-speaking world. As a modern linguist, students will develop excellent communication and research skills, and combine proficiency in multiple languages with cross-cultural perspectives. In the third year students can spend a year working, teaching or studying abroad, where they will immerse themselves in another language and culture, truly broadening their horizons in the process. Classical Studies is suitable for students who are passionate about classical literature and philosophy and are keen to understand more about ancient history and classical archaeology. Classical Studies offers a great deal of choice in subjects related to the ancient world, immersing students in lots of aspects of ancient Greece and Rome – its literature, history, philosophy and archaeology – even its languages; Greek and Latin can be studied at whatever level one at and for one, two or three years.
