Applying for a visa (international students)

If you’re an international student who wants to study in Switzerland, you’ll need to make a few arrangements before you start your studies. These arrangements include finding accommodation, getting insurance, and applying for a visa. The specific requirements will vary depending on your country of origin.

The visa application process can take up to three months, so it’s important to give yourself plenty of time. The best time to apply to prevent delays is at the end of May or early June.

Your visa will expire after three months. As soon as you arrive in Switzerland, you’ll need to apply for a residence permit, which usually lasts one year. This permit can be renewed if your studies last more than a year.

Student life

Why choose Zurich for your studies?

Set along the pristine shores of Lake Zurich, with the majestic Swiss Alps as its backdrop, Zurich offers students an idyllic setting to pursue their academic goals.     Widely regarded as one of the most liveable cities in the world, and consistently ranked in the top 10 QS Best Student Cities, Zurich offers a clean, safe and efficient environment. Blending academic prestige with urban sophistication, rich culture and natural splendour for a one-of-a-kind student experience.    Here are just some of the reasons Zurich is such a great student destination.

Academic prestige

Zurich is home to some of the highest-ranked universities in the world. With a long tradition of academic excellence spanning subjects like engineering, science, business, law and medicine, Zurich attracts bright minds eager to learn from the best.

Zurich: A city for everyone

As Switzerland's largest city, Zurich offers an incredibly diverse and multicultural experience. With people from all walks of life calling Zurich their home, students can immerse themselves in a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere.

The city brings together a melting pot of cultures, languages, cuisines and customs from around the world. Walking down the bustling streets, you're just as likely to hear Swiss-German as you are French, Italian, English or perhaps even Romansh, Switzerland’s fourth official language.     From food to festivals, Zurich offers a microcosm of shared worldwide experiences and perspectives within the borders of one friendly, welcoming city.

A taste of Switzerland

The city's thriving arts, culture, food and nightlife scenes offer endless opportunities for entertainment and recreation outside the classroom.

Indulge in Swiss delicacies like Züri-Gschnätzlets, rösti, and of course, famous Swiss chocolate. Marvel at masterpieces in the Swiss National Museum, one of the city's most important landmarks, or wander through the collections of the Kunsthaus Zürich art gallery. Attend festivals like the traditional Sechseläuten spring celebration or the Musikfest Zurich. And admire Zurich's past and present with a stroll along the shores of its iconic lake.

Zurich's central location in Europe also makes it easy to explore other destinations during breaks.

Whether enjoying the city's museums and festivals, or venturing out on weekend excursions, you’ll have the chance to experience the best of Zurich and beyond.

Launching careers

Zurich is recognised globally as a leading financial and business hub. With its high concentration of major banking and finance companies and large global firms, the city offers graduates bright prospects for lucrative positions in fields like banking, finance, accountancy, international trade, business consultancy and wealth management. The city's high standard of living, low unemployment rates and policies favouring skilled professionals make it easy for students to launch their international careers after graduation. Zurich serves as a springboard for building experience and networks in a premier financial centre.

What support does SBS Swiss Business School offer its student?

The SBS Student Council (SSC) is your voice on campus. It advocates for student interests, provides valuable leadership opportunities, and helps you make the most of your time at SBS.    Here are a few of the benefits of the SSC:

  • Advocate for student interests. The SSC is the best way to make sure that your voice is heard on campus. It works with the administration to ensure that student needs are met and that the student experience is as positive as possible.

Does SBS provide accommodation for students?

Although like many Swiss universities, SBS doesn't offer on-campus accommodation, you have lots of great options to choose from.

Shared flats with other students, known as ‘WG’ or ‘Wohngemeinschaft’, are popular, putting you right in the heart of student life. You'll split costs and make new friends at the same time.    Living in the local area means you get to walk or bike to class everyday through scenic Swiss neighbourhoods. Typical housing rates range from 600-800 CHF per month for a shared flat to 900-1500 CHF for a private studio apartment. However, proximity to campus and amenities makes the prices worthwhile.    The key is starting your search early. Websites like WGZimmer and Students.ch actively help students find available rooms or empty flats to turn into a WG. Reach out to current students for recommendations, and keep in mind locations near public transportation. This is your chance to experience Swiss culture by living like a local.
