The dual programs for prospective teachers provide a broad general education (the Liberal Arts Core of the College of Arts and Sciences), depth in the content area to be taught, and professional coursework and field experiences focusing on the skills and knowledge necessary to teach students from diverse backgrounds and with varying abilities. Students in the dual programs complete a program of study offered jointly by the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education: English education; mathematics education; science education (biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics); or social studies education. Students also complete the requirements for a College of Arts and Sciences major in the subject area. Syracuse University has one of the most innovative undergraduate English Education programs in the nation. English Education students declare majors in both English and Textual Studies and English Education, earning a dual B.A. degree from the School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences. The English Education major cannot be completed without this dual enrollment. In addition, students formally declare a major in English and Textual Studies (ETS), which would also be listed on the transcript. Students earn one diploma granted by both colleges. In English Education courses, students learn how to address all learners’ needs in a changing diverse society, with particular emphasis on cultural and linguistic diversity, integration of media and technology, multi-level teaching, and standards-based assessment.
