The dual programs for prospective teachers provide a broad general education (the Liberal Arts Core of the College of Arts and Sciences), depth in the content area to be taught, and professional coursework and field experiences focusing on the skills and knowledge necessary to teach students from diverse backgrounds and with varying abilities. Students in the dual programs complete a program of study offered jointly by the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education: mathematics education. Students also complete the requirements for a College of Arts and Sciences major in the subject area. The Mathematics Education Program at Syracuse University is a joint program in the Department of Mathematics and in the School of Education's Teaching and Leadership program. Mathematics Education at Syracuse University is committed to the integration of theory and practice through university-school partnerships and extensive field-based experiences for all students. In addition, students formally declare a Mathematics major (sometime after completion of MAT 295, 296, 397 with no grade below a C, and enrollment in MAT 275 or 331) which would also be listed as a program of study on their record. Students earn one diploma granted by both colleges.
