The Southern University Center of the University of Guadalajara offers the Master's Degree in Public Health, according to the objectives and essential functions as a frame of reference for the structure of the study plan. The activities integrated into the curriculum are aimed at the training of specialized, critical and innovative human resources, capable of designing, developing and evaluating intervention programs in the field of Public Health from a professional perspective. It is located in the Southern Zone of Jalisco in Ciudad Guzmán, Municipality of Zapotlán el Grande. Recognized by the National Postgraduate System (SNP) of CONACYT with a validity of 5 years (January 2022 - 2027) as a professional development program.
The current concept of “Public Health” began to develop in the mid-18th century, in a time characterized by large social movements that positively impacted the health of the population. Different definitions have emerged that frame Public Health as a branch of medicine whose fundamental interest is concern for health from a collective perspective. This program has a vision committed to the promotion of health, the prevention of disease and the prolongation of life through the organized effort of society.
Among the most important objectives that Public Health has assumed are the following:
  • Prevention of epidemics and the spread of diseases.
  • Protection against environmental damage.
  • Prevention of health damage.
  • Promotion and encouragement of healthy behaviors.
  • Response to disasters and assistance to affected communities.
  • Guarantee of quality and accessibility to health services.

In the context of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the essential functions of Public Health have been redefined for the countries of America. The following have been identified as critical to the practice of Public Health in this region.
  • Monitoring and analysis of the health situation of the population.
  • Public Health Surveillance, investigation and control of risks and damages in Public Health.
  • Health promotion.
  • Social participation and empowerment of citizens in health.
  • Development of policies, plans and management capacity, in support of public health efforts and the national health leadership.
  • Regulation and supervision in Public Health.
  • Evaluation and promotion for equitable access of the population to the necessary health services.
  • Development of human resources and training in Public Health.
  • Quality guarantee in individual and collective health services.
  • Research, development and implementation of innovative solutions in Public Health.
  • Reducing the impact of health emergencies and disasters.
