The Master of Science in Chemistry, emerged in 1995 as a professional postgraduate course, whose initial objective was to help increase the knowledge of its students in the area of Organic Chemistry. In the first two years of its existence, twenty professionals joined it, most of them teachers in the area of chemistry, both at the undergraduate and high school level, but some employees in the chemical industry were also included; all of them, part-time students. Such was the initial interest in the program that, after those two years, it reached its saturation, having to limit subsequent income until spaces were vacated.

Towards the year 1999, the plenary of professors, together with the authorities in turn, made the decision to reorient the postgraduate course towards research, outlining it as a candidate to enter the then-called CONACyT Padrón of Excellence, an objective they achieved in the year 2001, thus initiating the uninterrupted history of this postgraduate degree as a deserving of the CONACyT distinctions, in its different modalities. As part of the aforementioned reorientation, new professors were incorporated, all of them Ph.D. members of the National System of Researchers, new areas were opened (Polymer Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Physicochemistry and Biochemistry), the available research infrastructure was strengthened.

The first period in the Padrón of excellence (2001-2005) was a transition period, in which two clearly differentiated objectives had to be faced. On the one hand, it was necessary to promote the qualification of students who entered between 1995 and 1997, who, being part-time students, had to face the problem of limited time availability during the period of completion of their respective theses, which which led them to require several years to achieve the objective of obtaining their respective degrees. Fortunately, most of them achieved their goal over time.

On the other hand, since from its beginnings as a postgraduate course of the Padrón de Excelencia young students were entering it, as full-time students, it was necessary to provide them with what they needed to comply, in a timely manner, with the standards of quality required by CONACyT. Proof of having achieved both objectives at an adequate level is that in the CONACyT evaluation of 2005, our membership was renewed, granting us the maximum validity (5 years); An equivalent situation has occurred in the following evaluations (2010 and 2015), which we hope will be repeated in the 2020 evaluation.
