The University of Oviedo is a public university located in the scenic region of Asturias, in northern Spain. For over 400 years it has been the main centre and disseminator of academic knowledge in the region and a leader in international cooperation and innovation.

The University has campuses in Oviedo, Gijón and Mieres, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in arts and humanities, law, social sciences, engineering, health sciences, and natural sciences. It has 56 undergraduate degrees, 66 master’s degrees and 28 doctoral programs, some of them with an international or interuniversity character. The University offers various double-degree agreements that allow students to obtain two official degrees from different universities, enhancing their academic profile and employability. Available programs

The University of Oviedo offers a wide range of opportunities and studies in all areas of knowledge, including Arts and Humanities, Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Law, and Engineering and Architecture. There are several campuses located in the region of Asturias in the cities of Oviedo and Gijón, as well as in Mieres.


In the Arts and Humanities area, the University offers undergraduate degrees in Classical and Romance Studies, English Studies, Philosophy, Geography and Spatial Planning, History, History of Art, History and Musicology, Spanish Language and Literature, and Modern Languages and Literatures.


In the field of Pure Sciences, the University offers sought-after double degrees such as the Double Degree in Software Engineering and Mathematics and the Double Degree in Mathematics and Physics (with two options: Option A starting with the mathematics branch and Option B starting with the physics branch). In addition, there are individual degrees in Biology, Biotechnology, Physics, Geology, Mathematics, and a bilingual degree in Chemistry.


In the Health Sciences area, there are degrees in Nursing (offered at the Faculty of Nursing in Gijón - an  affiliated center -  and in Oviedo), Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy (offered at "Padre Ossó" Faculty, a  private affiliated center),  and the popular degrees in Medicine, Dentistry, and Psychology.


In the field of Social Sciences and Law, in addition to the Double Degree in Business Administration and Law, there are undergraduate degrees in Law, Early Childhood Education (at "Padre Ossó" Faculty and Llamaquique Campus, Oviedo), Pedagogy, Labour Relations and Human Resources, Social Work, Social Education ("Padre Ossó" Faculty), Primary Education ("Padre Ossó" Faculty), as well as a Distance Learning Degree in Public Management and Administration (online mode). There  are also bilingual degrees such as Business Administration and Management, Commerce and Marketing, Accounting and Finance, Economics, Primary Education (bilingual degree only at Llamaquique Campus, Oviedo), and Tourism.


In the broad field of Engineering and Architecture, there is a wide range of opportunities, including the Double Degree in Civil Engineering and Mining and Energy Resources Engineering (bilingual), the Double Degree in Telecommunication Technologies and Services Engineering and Data Science and Engineering, the Double Degree in Software Engineering and Mathematics (mentioned earlier), the Double Degree in Information Technology Engineering and Data Science and Engineering, as well as individual degrees in Data Science and Engineering, Mining Technologies Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, Forestry and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Marine Engineering, and Nautical and Maritime Transportation. Within this field of knowledge, the University also offers bilingual degrees in Civil Engineering, Mining and Energy Resources Engineering, Industrial Organization Engineering, Industrial Technologies Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Automatic Electronics Engineering, Forestry and Environmental Engineering, Telecommunication Technologies and Services Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Chemical Engineering.


There are two modalities for bilingual degrees. In modality 1, the University offers the possibility of obtaining 120 credits by taking courses taught in English that are available for modality 1 bilingual programs These include the bilingual degrees in Business Administration and Management, Economics, Primary Education (Llamaquique Campus), Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Automatic Electronics Engineering, Industrial Organization Engineering, Industrial Chemical Engineering, Industrial Technologies Engineering, Telecommunication Technologies and Services Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology Engineering and Chemistry.

In modality 2, 120 credits are obtained by complementing 60 credits obtained from courses taught in English at the University of Oviedo that are available for modality 2 bilingual programs with 60 credits obtained during an internship at a foreign university carried out throughout the degree. Modality 2 bilingual degrees include degrees in Commerce and Marketing, Accounting and Finance, Tourism, Civil Engineering, Mining and Energy Resources Engineering and Forestry and Environmental Engineering.

In the field of Arts and Humanities, available programs include master’s degrees in Spanish as a Foreign Language; Advanced Studies in Art History: Research and Management; Science, Technology and Innovation Studies; Gender and Diversity; History and Sociocultural Analysis; Spanish Language and Linguistics; Musical Heritage; and Territorial Resources and Planning Strategies. 

In the field of Pure Sciences, the master’s programs that are offered include the Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Marine Biological Resources, as well as the master’s degrees  in  Data Analysis for Business Intelligence; Food Biotechnology; Biotechnology Applied to Conservation and Sustainable Management of Plant Resources; Environmental and Health Biotechnology; Analytical and Bioanalytical Sciences; Marine Conservation; Advanced Physics: Particles, Astrophysics, Nanophysics, and Quantum Materials; Mathematical Modeling and Research, Statistics, and Computation; Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling; Chemistry and Sustainable Development; and Geological Resources and Geological Engineering.

In the field of Health Sciences, the offered master’s programs include the Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Public Health in Disasters and the master’s degrees  in  Emergency Analysis and Management; Biology and Reproductive Technology; Biomedicine and Molecular Oncology; Emergency and Critical Care Nursing; Neuroscience Research; Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics; and General Health Psychology.

University information

There are different ways of entering the University of Oviedo:

The most common way to gain entrance is the University Entrance Examination, also known by its acronym EBAU. It is organised by the University of Oviedo and the educational administration of the Principality of Asturias. The test consists of two phases, one compulsory for university access and one voluntary to improve the admission mark up to 4 points.

Another way is admission by change of studies or change of university. The students must meet a series of requirements specified in the university website. In general terms these requirements are: The recognition of at least 30 credits. Certification of an admission mark in their studies of origin equal to or higher than 85% of the cut-off mark in the immediately previous academic year in the studies of the University of Oviedo.

It is also possible to access the University of Oviedo with studies taken abroad. Students interested in studying at the University of Oviedo have a wide variety of access options, whether to begin a degree, postgraduate or doctorate programme, or to apply for a mobility programme.

For visiting students, the University of Oviedo offers the possibility of taking courses or subjects of the degrees it offers to people who are interested in broadening their knowledge if they meet the access requirements.

The University of Oviedo makes a specific reservation of places for certain groups of students like people with special needs and high-performance sportsmen and women who wish to start a degree course at the University of Oviedo. These students must apply for pre-enrolment as a procedure prior to admission and enrolment.

The University of Oviedo has seven campuses spread across the central area of Asturias, located in the cities of Oviedo (with five sub-campuses), Gijón and Mieres. The University also offers complementary services in Avilés, the third largest city in the region.

The university provides free access to its complete sports facilities for the university community. It also has modern accommodation options for students, teachers, and administrative and service staff (ASS). The University of Oviedo has two exceptional halls of residence in the city of Oviedo to ensure a comfortable and fully integrated stay in university life, both of them on Los Catalanes campus:  Colegio Mayor San Gregorio and Colegio Mayor América. Also on that campus there is the Residencia Altamira, a residence hall for visiting professors and postgraduates. These accommodations are located in a privileged environment with large green areas in front of the Winter Park, next to the university sports facilities, and close to the historic centre of the city. The halls of residence offer a range of services, including cleaning services, meals, Wifi connection for all members of the university community and other universities that belong to eduroam.

There is a third university hall of residence in Mieres with 112 beds in rooms and studios. The building has library services, a computer room, a self-service restaurant and Wifi in all areas. It is situated next to the teaching, research and sports facilities of the campus, a short walk from the town centre and opposite the bus station.

In Gijón, there are plans to build a modern facility that will offer 200 accommodation places for students on the campus.

The university has a library network with 16 libraries and more than one million books, journals and electronic resources. It has a cultural program that offers concerts, exhibitions, theater, cinema and other activities throughout the year. It has a language center that offers courses in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. It has a scientific park that promotes innovation and technology transfer between the university and the business sector and a historical building in the center of Oviedo that dates back to the 16th century in which all university activity took place for centuries.
