General objective:

Train professionals with a comprehensive profile, competent in the field of tourism oriented to continuous and interdisciplinary learning, with human quality and socially responsible, with the purpose of generating satisfiers that cover the social needs demanded by the tourism sector, such as: lodging, gastronomy , professional services, leisure, recreation and government.

Specific objectives:

  • Promote the development of logical, critical and creative thinking with an attitude of permanent learning, in the development, management, design, marketing, evaluation, analysis and interpretation of data in tourism with an entrepreneurial attitude, awareness of the sustainable aspect, innovation, vision and entrepreneurship, positive attitude towards continuous training, multi, inter and transdisciplinary work, which allow the student in training the generation and acquisition of new multidisciplinary knowledge so that he assumes the solution of problems with critical, active and proactive attitudes.
  • Promote the formation of attitudes of tolerance to cultural diversity, professional ethics, solidarity, disciplined, interdependent, self-determination, willingness to preserve and enhance tourism that denote the internalization of values ​​such as respect, honesty, commitment, responsibility and loyalty, which facilitate personal growth in its emotional, spiritual and corporal dimensions.
  • Contribute to the strengthening of the values ​​and attitudes that allow the subject to interact, live with others, work as a team for social and environmental sensitivity, social responsibility, open to collaborative work, respectful of cultures, habits and foreign customs, sense of belonging to the community with a social commitment, cultural identity, value to cultural diversity; promoting awareness of sustainability, entrepreneurship and innovation in social tourism, economic development, planning and programming, execution of objectives, goals, strategies and actions, design of tourism promotion plans and programs, applied research, ability to generate business opportunities and public relations.
  • Provide the student with educational experiences that allow the development of the knowledge that supports the Bachelor of Tourism, related to economic, environmental, social, political, ethnic and cultural problems, which will be required for their professional performance.

At undergraduate level, the Mexican Universidad de Sonora (UNISON) offers 55 bachelor’s degrees, including:

Admissions and costs

Undergraduate entry requirements include a high school diploma, a filled in application form, passing the admissions tests and proof of your proficiency in English. Keep in mind, you’ll also need a passport, student visa and health insurance to enter the country.

Tuition fees at undergraduate level include a MX$1,860 enrollment fee (≈US$89) and tuition is based on the number of courses a student takes per semester and their average grade from their previous semester, starting at MX$1,520 (≈US$72) per course. Depending on your grades, though, you may be eligible for a tuition fee reduction of up to 100%.

The cost of living in Hermosillo, where the university is situated, should be no more than US$700 a month, including accommodation, groceries, and transportation, though of course this figure can vary depending on the type of the accommodation you seek (whether a hotel or flatshare). 

A good mix of postgraduate courses

Based in Hermosillo, Mexico, the Universidad de Sonora (UNISON) offers 14 PhD programs, 33 master’s degrees and 7 certificates, including:

Costs, scholarships and admissions

To be eligible for postgraduate study, you would need a bachelor's degree, a GPA of 8.0, proof of your proficiency in Spanish and English (with a TOEFL score of 450), the GRE subject test (depending on the course), two letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a research proposal (only for PhDs).

UNISON offers all students with an average grade of somewhere between 80 and 85 a tuition fee reduction of 50% in their second semester.  This figure can rise up to 100% depending on their grade.

Students can also apply for a CONACYT scholarship for a monthly stipend of approximately MX$13,769 (≈US$770), provided they have a GPA of 8.0.
