About Universidad de Zaragoza

The University of Zaragoza is a public institution devoted to excellence in teaching, learning and research, development and innovation, and to developing leaders in many disciplines. The University, which is based in the Ebro Valley, and is in the heart of Aragon, flanked by the Pyrenees and the Iberian mountain range. Combines almost five centuries of tradition and history (since 1542) and has an enrollment of over 32,000-degree candidates, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The University bases its principles on quality, solidarity, sustainability as an call for action to promote prosperity while protecting the planet, and openness and aims to be an instrument of social transformation to drive economic and cultural development.

                                                                           

The University itself extends over three campuses that correspond to the three provinces within the Autonomous Community of Aragon.

 

Throughout its five centuries of history, characters from the botanist and economist Ignacio de Asso, the bibliographer Félix de Latassa, the geographer Isidoro de Antillón, the doctor Santiago Ramón y Cajal have passed through the classrooms of the University of Zaragoza (Nobel Prize in 1906) or the liberator of Cuba, José Martí. The University has also granted its highest award, the Honoris Causa Doctorate, to figures such as Luis Buñuel or Rigoberta Menchú, and posthumous gold medals to Santiago Ramón y Cajal or Ramón J. Sender.
