Overview

Located in the financial district of Panama City, the Universidad Metropolitana de Educación Ciencia y Tecnología (Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology) offers a wide range of academic programs across several faculties, including health sciences, technology, humanities and education sciences that are relevant to the evolving demands and needs of a globalized world.

The main language of instruction at UMECIT is Spanish, with opportunities for students to develop their foreign language skills whilst studying.

The Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology has nine campuses situated across the national territory of Panama which are all home to their own key departments and administrative services, including: a legal office, psychology office, specialized center of physiotherapy, Chamber of Gesell, Trial Chamber, as well as a maritime simulator.

Students also have access to a number of digital resources and platforms, including: E-ducative, Moodle Rooms, UonLine, E-Book, E-Legal, as well as Edusoft and Cibërsity – an emerging cutting-edge technology that’s becoming an integral element to the students’ education at the university.


Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology is home to just over 1,200 students, including international students from Colombia, Venezuela, the United States, Mexico, Peru, amongst other countries in the region.

Students live off-campus, but access to the university is easy, thanks to the city’s various modes of transport, including buses, the metro, and taxis.

UMECIT encourages a healthy work-life balance for all students and offers an abundance of extracurricular activities for everyone to enjoy, from the theater, to the university sports league, to reading groups, and even the university radio station!

If you’re an international student who’s interested in applying to Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology, you will need to submit the following documentation as well as an application form, depending on whether you wish to study at undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD level.

Undergraduate admissions

  • Original and copy of your approved baccalaureate diploma or equivalent
  • Original and copy of the credits of the baccalaureate diploma or equivalent
  • Attend an interview with the admissions team
  • A photocopy of passport 
  • Provide two passport-sized photographs
  • Undertake a medical healthcare check
  • Complete the registration form


Specialization and master’s admissions

  • Possess a professional degree, a degree or its equivalent or professional careers or a related degree issued by a duly recognized institution
    (Photocopies of the diploma for international students must be recognized and certified)
  • Certificate of qualifications corresponding to the professional career
    (Photocopies of the diploma for international students must be recognized and certified)
  • Have a cumulative academic index in the minimum degree of 1.5
  • Submit applicant letter
  • Provide an up-to-date curriculum vitae
  • Provide two passport-sized photographs
  • Undertake a medical healthcare check
  • Complete the registration form


PhD admissions
Please note that the admissions team will take into consideration your previous studies, the interview, recommendations and other requirements that are considered relevant to the respective program.

  • Possess a master's degree or equivalent, obtained with a minimum index of 2.0 or its equivalent, accepted by the University of Panama
    (If this has been awarded by an international institution, the degree must be duly registered and authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country that issues the degree)
  • Authenticated photocopy of titles and credits
  • Authorized translation into Spanish of titles and credits
  • Presentation of your doctoral thesis research, including the justification, description of research, objectives, theoretical framework, methodological framework and basic bibliography
  • Certification of basic knowledge of the Spanish language for international students whose native language is not Spanish
  • Possess basic computer skills
  • Copy of birth certificate or passport
  • Undertake a medical healthcare check
  • Complete the registration form


Fees and funding

The Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology is committed to the inclusion, accessibility and internationalization of higher education for all. Tuition fees for home and international students are the same, with additional funding such as scholarships also available.
