The number of people with diabetes is growing rapidly throughout the world. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 2017 it was estimated 425 million and by 2045 it is projected 629 million. The main cause of its rapid increase is the high rates of overweight and obesity, a population that worldwide reaches more than 3 billion. In Latin America, the population with diabetes will grow by 62%, from 26 to 42 million in the same period.

In our country, according to the ENDES 2018 survey, there is a prevalence of overweight of 34% and obesity of 21%, caused by excessive intake of high-calorie foods such as rice, flour and sugary drinks, as well as a reduction in activity physical. Due to the close relationship between obesity and diabetes mellitus in our country, the PERUDIAB study has found a prevalence of 7% of diabetes mellitus and 23% of fasting hyperglycemia (prediabetes) with a very high incidence of 20/1000/year. About 1 million people have diabetes and about 3 million prediabetes, which makes them susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

Given this reality, the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia has created the International Master's Program in Diabetes and Obesity with a mention in Nutritional Management, to fill a gap in the scientific training of health professionals on these diseases.
