The Graduate Program in Law focuses on “Development in the Democratic State of Law”. The lines of research are “Development, Democracy and Institutions” and “Legal Rationality and Fundamental Rights in the Construction of the Democratic State of Law”.

The area brings together theoretical, dogmatic and empirical studies in law aimed at carrying out models of social, environmental, economic and political development compatible with the ethical, political and legal requirements of the Social and Democratic State of Law outlined by contemporary constitutionalism. It seeks to enable academic production capable of qualifying the actions of public agents of the three powers, private sectors, civil society, vulnerable groups and social movements aimed at meeting the goals and objectives of the agendas agreed at the global, regional and local levels of sustainable development.

The regulatory frameworks of markets and public authorities in matters considered central to such agendas, as well as the adaptation of decision-making processes of democratic institutions to parameters of equal participation, transparency, good governance, independence and credibility have been the subject of several studies carried out by the Program.

The research seeks to refer to analytical and philosophical approaches that problematize the concept of development in light of the challenges of realizing the Social and Democratic State of Law and its imperatives of social justice and elimination of inequalities.

The Program seeks to offer support so that research can adopt innovative methodological approaches in law, able to guarantee the deepening of critical legal reflection, interdisciplinary and sensitive to Brazilian particularities and to the regional and global processes that have challenged the realization of the paradigms of social constitutionalism and contemporary democracy.
