Petroleum engineers graduated from Escola Politécnica da USP are qualified to work in several segments of the petroleum production chain, more specifically those related to the research of new deposits and the production of oil and natural gas. That is, from the initial geological studies, through the drilling of wells, to the production and primary processing of oil and gas.

To prepare you to perform these different functions, Poli's Petroleum Engineering course provides you with multidisciplinary training, including in its curriculum, in addition to traditional engineering disciplines, others related to geology, geophysics and ocean systems. This interdisciplinarity of knowledge is reflected in the field work of the petroleum engineer.

In the initial stage of oil research, for example, the professional uses geology and geophysics to prospect possible areas where oil deposits can be found. In the development phase, which begins after identifying a new oil or gas reservoir, the petroleum engineer has to assess the volume and the technical and economic viability for exploring these compounds, in addition to drilling wells to delimit the area of the reservoir and prepare it for production. Already in the production phase, it must select the most suitable oil and gas lifting system, as well as size the complex of platforms that will be installed.
