The Study Programme of Japanese Literature at the Faculty of Cultural Studies, University of Brawijaya was established in 2007. The study program is internationally certified by the ASEAN University Network of Quality Assurance (AUNQA) in 2022 and nationally accredited "Unggul" (Excellent) by the National Board for Accreditation of Higher Education (BAN-PT) in 2023.  SPJL designs its curriculum to enable students to study not only literature, culture and Japanese language, but also ethics, teaching, tourism, politics, media, translation and history related to Japan. SPJL graduates work as translators, Japanese or Indonesian representatives, Japanese teachers, young researchers, and entrepreneurs.

SPJL continuously increases the student’s international engagement through student exchange programs, visiting professors, and joint research program in collaboration with prominent international universities such as Hiroshima University, Kochi University, Kyoto University, Tohoku University, Kanazawa University, Nagoya City University, Yamanashi Gakuin University, Wako University. In addition, SPJL also cooperates with the industrial world both in Indonesia and in Japan for student internships such as PT IC Tech, PT Onodera, PT YMPI, PT HMI, Rising Sun Hotel, and LPK Fajar International.
