The master’s degree in “Pre-historic and Early Historical Archaeology” covers prehistoric and early historical archeology as well as medieval and early modern archeology. Prehistory or prehistory deals with topics from times from which no written evidence is known, while early history compares existing written sources with archaeological legacies. Research into the material legacies of past cultures is primarily done using archaeological humanities and cultural science methods aimed at evaluating excavation finds, which are often supplemented by scientific analysis methods.
Prehistoric and early historical archeology has an intermediary function, since it is methodologically located between the humanities and natural sciences. The profile of the course at the University of Hamburg focuses on cultural and social science issues as well as interdisciplinary work - especially in relation to geophysical and scientific investigation methods and ethnological-sociological modelling. In the master’s program, great value is placed on practical project and group work. Close cooperation is also sought with the neighboring museums and state monument offices as well as the Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research in Wilhelmshaven.
