The international bachelor’s degree in East Asia (IBO) at the University of Hamburg offers intensive language training, well-founded imparting of specialist knowledge of East Asian culture and a selected regional focus on history and the present. The course takes place mainly in small groups with the latest technical equipment and personal support. The course includes a stay abroad at a university in the respective region, and there are also course-related introductions to scientific work and targeted career orientation.


The four-year IBO with a focus on Japan imparts in-depth knowledge of the Japanese language and culture in an interdisciplinary and intercultural context. The Hamburg Japanese Studies has existed since 1914 and is the oldest specialist representation in Germany. The aim of the course is the scientific examination of the language and culture of Japan using sources in the Japanese language. The so-called "Hamburg Model" combines historical knowledge and topics of current affairs, aspects of Japanese culture (literature, intellectual and cultural history) and the areas of society and politics.
