Given its contribution to GDP, investment and employment, the electricity sector carries significant weight in the Spanish economy. It also has a multiplier effect on other sectors of the economy and is a key resource for many business activities and sectors, which are in turn generators of wealth. Over the last decade, this sector – one with well-established operational structures – has undergone a true revolution. There has been a shift from vertically integrated monopolistic systems to new paradigms, novel aspects of which include international electricity markets, development and integration of renewable energies, smart grids, active demand management and distributed generation, among others. In this dynamic context, the ongoing need for doctoral graduates with specialised training in electrical systems and the ability to drive innovation and technology transfer is beyond question. Graduates of the doctoral programme in Electric Energy Systems will play a key role in RDI at public and private centres and in companies. The productive fabric and universities need researchers who are equipped to advance knowledge and development of new techniques that add value to wealth-generating products and services. There is also a need for researchers who can take on board and put into practice the latest advances in engineering made in other regions and countries. That's why the research areas offered by the doctoral programme are leaders at the international level. To meet all these needs, the interuniversity doctoral programme brings together the efforts, experience and resources of departments and top research groups at the four participating universities and has concluded collaboration agreements with leading companies in the sector.University of Malaga (UMA)University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU)University of Seville (US, coordinator)

Applicants who meet one of the following conditions are also eligible for admission:

  1. Holders of an official degree awarded by a university in Spain or any other country in the EHEA who have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 must be at the master's degree level. This includes holders of official Spanish pre-EHEA degrees. The degree must correspond to Level 3 in the  Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (MECES) (open in new window) (1)

  2. Holders of an official bachelor's degree of at least 300 ECTS credits (e.g. the degree in Architecture). In this case, you must take bridging courses if your degree does not include research training that is equivalent to the research credits on the master's degree of which the bridging courses form part.

  3. Holders of a degree awarded in a foreign education system. In this case, homologation is not required, but the UPC must verify that the degree certifies a level of training equivalent to an official Spanish master's degree and qualifies the holder for admission to doctoral studies in the country where it was awarded. This does not imply the homologation of your degree and is solely for the purposes of admission to doctoral studies.   (2)

  4. Holders of a Spanish doctoral qualification issued under previous university regulations.

  5. Holders of the Diploma of Advanced Studies, in accordance with Royal Decree 778/1998.

  6. Holders of the Diploma of Research Proficiency, in accordance with Royal Decree 185/1985.

  7. Holders of an official university qualification who, having gained a trainee post in the entrance examination for specialised medical training posts, have successfully passed at least two years of training on a programme leading to an official degree in a health-sciences specialisation.
