The doctorate in planning aims to train students in research and to develop expertise, with a diversity of perspectives, on the issues and practices related to living environments and planning issues. This program embodies the very essence of the Faculty of Environmental Design's culture based on a multi-stakeholder approach to work and a broad understanding of environmental design. In this sense, it is characterized by:
  • a multidisciplinary approach which, by bringing together the five planning disciplines – architecture, landscape architecture, industrial design, interior design and urban planning – addresses the social, cultural and physical dimensions of the problems specific to living environments;
  • an interdisciplinary openness that leads to exploring areas related to planning and integrating their knowledge in order to extend knowledge and grasp the complexity of contemporary issues;
  • a variety of fields of research and specialization approached with a coherent scientific approach and whose promising themes relate in particular to questions of culture and society and health and society, the occupation and transformation of built spaces, the development territories, management in developing countries, sustainable development, and information and communication technologies.

Oriented towards research, this program offers students an environment enriched by the presence of some twenty research units, allowing access to the most up-to-date knowledge and active participation in projects.
The doctorate thus prepares students to play a leading role in planning, whether for research, higher education or consultation. It aims to advance knowledge and thinking on a subject in innovative areas as well as to generate new ideas and communicate them.
