Since the 1930s, many composer-researchers have explored the universe of mixed music by combining the acoustic sounds of instruments with the electroacoustic sounds projected by loudspeakers.

Over the past few decades, the design of sophisticated computer tools has allowed an extraordinary development of this new branch of musical creation, causing the entire thought of sound to evolve through new and daring works. At the cutting edge of research, the Faculty of Music set up, in 1999, a mixed composition program that allows students to discover and experiment with these two worlds in order to merge them in their compositional work.

The bank of courses offers a privileged environment which is based, among other things, on learning the most recent software for analysis and synthesis of sound, and assistance with composition. Students also have access to acoustically high-level broadcast systems, studios and concert halls.

The team of teachers brings together high-level composers whose careers extend beyond Canada's borders. Added to the richness of the courses offered, the multiplicity of stylistic tendencies of this team constitutes a major asset for any student wishing to find his way in composition.

This training can be continued in higher education, at the 2nd  cycle level (master's degree in composition), then at the 3rd  cycle level (doctorate in composition and DEPA in composition for the screen and the stage).
