History and Classics, two of the original departments in what was then the Faculty of Arts and Sciences when the University of Alberta was founded in 1908, merged in 1994. Since then we have offered an increasingly interdisciplinary learning environment, with graduate training in history, archaeology, language, literature, and, most recently, ancient societies and cultures. Within that framework, students in both History and Classics streams can choose to focus in one of several Areas of Study. Reflecting the national and international reputation of its faculty, the Department boasts a number of recognized areas of excellence in research and attracts graduate students not only from Alberta and across Canada but also from overseas. Through faculty appointments and research interests, our Department maintains close links with a number of other campus units. They are the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies; the Departments of Anthropology, East Asian Studies, English and Film Studies, Human Ecology, Philosophy and Sociology; Faculty of Arts interdisciplinary programs in Humanities Computing, Science, Technology and Society, and Religious Studies; the Faculties of Native Studies, Law, and Medicine and Dentistry; and the Wirth Centre for Austrian and Central European Studies.
