The MSc minimum course requirement is four courses plus the ethics course. At least two courses must be 600 or higher level courses in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. The balance of the courses shall be at the 500 or higher level in the Faculty of Engineering, or at the 400 or higher level in a Science Department. Science courses at the 400 level must be approved by the supervisor and Associate Chair (Graduate).  The intellectual origins of materials science stem from the Enlightenment, when researchers began to use analytical thinking from chemistry, physics, and engineering to understand ancient, phenomenological observations in metallurgy and mineralogy.[1][2] Materials science still incorporates elements of physics, chemistry, and engineering.
