Tuition fees

The University of Milan is a public institution. Therefore, the university offers lower tuition fees in proportion to income, with fees being curbed in order to guarantee, to the greatest possible extent, the right for every student to have the opportunity to study. 

For international students, enrolment fees vary according to the student’s citizenship and can vary between €156 to maximum of €1,156 each academic year.

The University of Milan also offers scholarships and other special funding, such as refectory and accommodation services. Enrolled students can apply for a scholarship, depending on whether they’re based on merit, income or both.

The Excellence Scholarships program is particularly aimed at international students. The program offers 100 incentive grants to the newly enrolled best international students at master’s level. The incentives include 50 scholarships of €6,000 plus enrollment fee exemption.

Almost all bachelor's and single cycle degree programs require candidates sit an admission test to ensure they are eligible for their chosen course of study. Each year, between February and July, the University of Milan publishes its calls to apply for admission to bachelor’s degree programs. These calls for application report the procedure for enrolment (matriculation) on the first year of studies, as well as:

Those who hold, or are about to complete a bachelor's degree (or equivalent title) by the end of December or by the deadline indicated in the Program Structure for the selected master's degree program may apply to enroll on a postgraduate degree program. 

Graduates who wish to apply for a doctoral program or a medical specialization school must follow the instructions in the competitive examination announcements.

For specific entry requirements you should also consult the master’s degree program that you’re interested in applying to. 

European citizens, non-EU citizens who reside in Italy with a current, valid “permesso di soggiorno” (residence permit) and natives of Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein can apply. Non-EU citizens who are residents abroad must submit a pre-application request to the Italian Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence.

The University of Milan’s main campus is located in the old “Ca’ Granda”, a striking historical complex in the heart of Milan. The university’s other campuses are located in historic buildings and modern structures that are situated in both the city center and in the university district which was built in the 1920’s and is known as “Città Studi”.

Student life

Student life in Milan 

Studying at the University of Milan and living in Milan is an exciting experience. Milan – which hosted the Expo 2015 – is known throughout the world for science, finance, fashion, design, publishing, theatre, music, food and its international trade fairs.  

It is also an extremely lively city, which offers great cultural opportunities as well as the best in sports and leisure. Due to its central position in the northern part of Italy, it is a good point of access for many world-renowned localities. The most famous Italian lakes are just one hour away, while just a little more time is needed to reach the Alps, the Ligurian Sea, Venice and Florence by car or train, and all the major European cities by plane.

Milan is the capital of Lombardy region, known for its economic, cultural and scientific relevance. Moreover Milan, plays host, amongst other things, to more than 300 events  attended by tens of thousands of people every year.  

Student life on campus

The University of Milan itself is home to approximately 64, 000 students – with almost seven percent of students being international students, representing 196 different countries around the world.  

It promotes sporting and cultural activities for both students and staff, through its University Sport Centre and through collaborations and special arrangements with the city’s main gymnasiums, cinemas, dance/music agents and theatres.  

Students can also take part in music and theatre initiatives organized by the university’s resident cultural institutions, which include the Orchestra, the Choir and the University Theatre Centre. The University of Milan Orchestra offers students the possibility to audition for a classical music ensemble that is both young and prestigious, thanks to its close collaboration with the “Giuseppe Verdi” Conservatory of Milan.

The University of Milan offers a guidance service to help future students with their study choices and to provide graduates with career advice. Future students can obtain information about courses and study programs through group presentations and individual interviews.

The university also helps students approach the job market by offering internships, interviews with companies, as well as advertising job vacancies on the online noticeboard. The university has over 1, 500 partnerships which offer worldwide mobility opportunities for its graduate and undergraduate students.

Within a year of graduating, 53 percent of bachelor’s graduates are in employment, 64. 1 percent of master’s graduates are in employment, and 55. 4 percent of single-cycle graduates are in employment.
