This course offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich and varied output of women writers across history and to consider critical issues surrounding gender and writing from 1500 to the present day. During the course, students study 2 contrasting areas of concern for 20th-century women writers: Constructions of and writing by The New Woman between 1800 and the First World War, and the impact of conflict on gender and creativity during the First and Second World Wars. The accompanying core module considers broader historical and contemporary debates in feminism and gender studies; students are also be able to pursue individual interests via the 20 credits left free for options: Either a special topic in English Studies, a core module from a different English MLitt, or a module outwith English altogether.
