This programme is suitable for those who are interested in the literature of the Romantic period, including the Gothic. This innovative course will enable students to explore the literary migration of ideas and texts during the Romantic and Revolutionary period between 1770 and 1830 in Western Europe. Students will study with world-leading academics, taking modules from across the Faculty of Arts, and developing excellent research skills through to their dissertation. It would be helpful to have a reading knowledge of one of French, German or Italian, but students don’t need these to complete the course successfully. This is a taught MA with a significant research component in the form of a compulsory dissertation. Each student will write two essays of 5,000 words (Research Methods is assessed by an extended bibliographical exercise). The Dissertation (20,000 words) is planned over Terms 1 and 2 and written in Term 3 and the summer vacation. Supervisors will be assigned by the end of Term 1 and supervision continues through the end of Term 3. Students use the summer for final revisions and writing up.
